Good Stuff

I got a couple of emails from readers and friends worth quoting...

"1 year ago RBS paid $100bn for ABN Amro.

For this amount it could now buy:
 Citibank $22.5bn
 Morgan Stanley $10.5bn
 Goldman Sachs $21bn
 Merrill Lynch $12.3bn
 Deutsche Bank $13bn
 Barclays $12.7bn
 And still have $8bn change......
with which you  would be able to pick  up GM, Ford, Chrysler and the Honda F1 Team &  sponsor Lance in his 9th  Tour de France!!!"

"You've jogged dormant memories with your mentioning your garden in your blog. When I was very young my paternal grandmother had a small backyard garden at her home in Fort Green, Brooklyn, where she grew most of our vegetables. My job was to follow the iceman's horse drawn wagon about and, with a wiskbroom and pan, collect the horse manure to fertilize that garden."

I believe we have arrived at the destination Jefferson warned us about.
Jefferson in some cases could be called a prophet.

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe .
Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
Thomas Jefferson

Very Interesting Quote

In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'

More government paranoia. I swear to you, we Federal employees have trouble coordinating a decent holiday floor luncheon -- so much trouble that my floor isn't even having one this year. The banks have money (all the money that is being printed now is being stored at the banks, per Mish), Jewel food stores are still open, and I dare you to take one of your pissant guns and go after one of these heavily-armed, heavily-protected cops we have running around our building. You may be will to accept a little less freedom in exchange for your life. ;)

Dear Bureaucrat,

There are over 200 Million piss-ant guns in this country. If things get to the point of real civil unrest against an oppressive government these guns serve an important purpose. If the populace is unarmed and defenseless, the army doesn't have to shoot to maintain order. In the face of an armed populace, they will. Very few soldiers will want to shoot at their own.

Sure, we can be controlled with tanks and daisycutters, but the government that uses them will lose all popular support. This is why the gun control folks are so rabid about disarming honest citizens.

Ultimately, government will always be more responsive to a well armed populace.

Our Army is already being shot at daily, in Iraq & Afghan. Your little "gun strategy" is already failing overseas. The Army has already figured out how to overwhelm you and all the other "gunnies", as well as the rest of the population, which is easy cause most are female, are children, are old, or have no problem with the government since the "phony food Cheetos" will always be on the shelves. The Army isn't afraid of the peoples' popguns. Matter of fact, they would probably enjoy winning a confrontation. Let's confront the real energy problems instead. Nobody is gonna take away your guns.

Dear Bureaucrat,

I don't own a gun, and don't want one. But, I still contend that government is more responsible to a well armed populace. I am not for gun control for just about that reason alone.

Further, the thought that our law enforcement and military would get off on shooting the crap out of their own people is beyond belief. This is the very attitude from government that Jefferson was so concerned about.

Dear Bureaucrat,

And further, since we went on the offensive against terrorists, we haven't seen any big buildings fall in the US, and the worldwide rate of terrorist attacks is down considerably.

If we has spent the money that we have spent in Iraq on replacing foreign oil, we would be well on our way to independence from that whole mess. On that I agree. Let the French handle it!

The "war on terrorism" was a joke from the beginning. We were attacked in 2001 by 19 very motivated and very lucky non-governmental actors who were stoked by religious fervor and who luckily found the weakness in the defense -- easily opened cockpit doors. There hasn't been anything since then because nobody else has felt like really attacking us (the recent arrests of people "planning" to do something have been laughable plans). Since then, I have had to live with this fear nonsense every day, with my 25-character passwords that change every 90 days and having to do the metal detector/x-ray shit every morning at work. Life has slowed to a wasteful crawl. The terrorists have already won.
