"A Star is Born"

Sarah Palin!

It was thrilling to watch this "hockey mom" put the sexist jag offs in the media back on their heels.  For whatever reason, Racism is is OK for some voters and unacceptable for others, but sexism is just fine for all.  Consistency was never the strong point of the Main Stream Media.

Palin is certainly not going to ingratiate herself, being the attractive, feminine, family woman, self made success story that she is with certain childless members of the political left, but they were never in play.  My bet is Palin put married women with children back in play, and it is this group that will decide the election.

This whole thing is a complete DISASTER for Hillary.  If Obama wins, he will certainly run again, leaving Hillary on the sidelines for the next 8 years.  If McCain wins, he will almost certainly be a 1 term president, and Hillary would have her hands FULL in taking Palin to task. Still, I think Hillary did a service to her country and wish her well in her senatorial retirement. Sorry Hillary, but Palin is a self made mother of 5, a  real American Horatio Alger.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether or not Palin can capture enough of the women vote to overcome Obama's formidable organization.  But I love a good fight, and now I would like to see the 2 sides talk about the fact that America's oil imports have fallen by over 7% in 2008 from 2007.  Not to mention, what are we going to do next year and the year after if that trend continues?

Somebody ping me when these folks start to talk about the REAL issues.

Yours for a better world,

Mentatt (at) yahoo (d0t) com

(From the Fed. bureaucrat just waiting for Palin to come and wave the "waste, fraud and abuse" sword in my office) ...

Obama allowed his petty differences with Hillary to get in the way of choosing her. I think you are getting too excited about this lightweight, trailer trash VP pick. Hypocrisy doesn't even begin to ..... anyway, the middle/independents were always the ones in play (why Hillary would have lost as Pres). But as much as people like FILTHY STINKIN' RICH JEFFERS :) try to keep the Christians (1/3rd of voters) voting Republican (the RNC convention was feel-good nonsense) to benefit the 5% of people with assets over $1 mil, the "screaming for change" Obama young & poor will win the day. The moose should be getting nervous -- Palin is staying right where she is. *BllaaammmBlllaammm!!* Die Moose!! :)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than two thirds of Americans would rather be stranded on a desert island with their pet than with their partner, a poll showed on Thursday.

The survey of 1,105 pet owners by Petplan found more than half threw parties for their pets, nearly 70 percent share their beds with a pet, 63 percent cook for their pets and 68 percent dress their pets up.

Americans spent about $48 billion on pets in 2007, according to U.S. consumer research company Packaged Facts.

And their vote counts as much as yours does.

Counts as much as mine?

Bro, I do not matter... not even a little bit.

I am just enjoying the insanity of this politcal season more than others.

I don't have a dog in this hunt. Obama comes from the wrong side of the tracks - you can't begin to know how much that appeals to me. on the other hand, the Dems, while perfectly capable of grasping the concept of the exponential function as it applies to oil supplies, suddenly go dark when the same law of math is applied to social programs. Go figure.

When I was young, i used to work in political campaigns. So for me, this is just a busmans holiday - it just ain't my problem

Frnakly, I am REALLY impress by both sides left standing... and am horrbly disappointed in the libertarian Republicans which, even though McCain is the nominess, cannot seem to find their own ass with both hands.

And finally... I eat meat, I fish, and I have hunted for food for the table. If you were looking to make a point here, it was lost on me.

But good on ya!

Dear Bureaucrat:

I gotta call you out on this one.

I come from a white trash, velvetta & spam for breakfast and PB&J sandwiches for for lunch kind of po' folks background. My parents did not go to college, nor much of high school.

Why is it that it is still acceptable to foster insults on my kind, while the "N" word will get you fired faster than Richard Pryor (my other favorite comedian)? Poor white people still suffer from from bigotry & prejudice in PUBLIC - and it pisses me off.

Being from working class white trash is what turns me on about Palin (and Obama, but he is only half white trash), it certainly isn't her religious background (I am as secular it gets). Folks born to establishment families - black or white - will always run the train set for the most part (look at McCain: son and grandson of U.S. Navy Admirals). It is just fun for me to see one of "us" break through.

Are the presidency and vice prez offices to be filled by people who we would feel comfortable to drink a beer with.

I am sure Ms Palin is a cool person in her own way. But do we want a small town mayor who believes the earth is 5000 years old to control the 10,000 weapon US nuclear arsenal? Or to make decisions about war with Russia?

Spooky. Very spooky. And it speaks well to the general disconnect to reality of US society.

(From Bureaucrat, etc., etc.)

Thru no fault of my own, I seem to have ended up with a handful of Mexican-American friends, all of whom grew up in modest circumstances. They didn't go to Northwestern like me. They alternate between wrecking their cars, drinking too much, spending every dime they have, and sometimes making other poor choices. I have no problem with your modest background, and what you did despite it. But the overwhelming majority of people in the lower half seem to have this innate need for self-destruction, like my friends: career-wise, education-wise, financially, beer-wise, etc. My friends are totally frustrating!! They are all good people and they make me laugh. But they would NEVER work as Vice Presidents! :)

Yup. The drink a beer test. Thats what makes for a great leader. A man who goes with his gut. Its worked out real good for me cause i'm gonna be rich and pay no taxes some day too!

For better or worse, we have had our fair share of fundamentalists in the White House.

And BTW, not one of these jag offs would pass a polygraph test if asked if they REALLY BELIEVE that silliness. Nada. Zip.

Most ordained members of the Church, Rabbis, Evangelicals, etc... could not pass this polygraph test.

"Everyone wants to go to heaven. No one is willing to die to get there" pretty much sums up what we all know to be the truth.

Dear Bureaucrat:

I am not suggesting for one second that most poor people do not everything they possibly can to remain poor - smoking, drinking, buying lottery tickets, violating the law though (DUI is a favorite) they cannot afford a lawyer, declining to save, while using credit cards to finance a lifestyle they cannot afford and then letting that debt destroy their chances... did I mention having children they cannot provide for?

Bro, NO ONE has a had harder, up close look at this than me (other than my siblings)... Poor folks have a responsibility to THEMSELVES, most reject that responsibility and continue the cycle.

Rich kids grow up thinking that their successes were just them picking themselves up by their bootstraps! My kids have no idea of the advantages they have, or concept of life any other way. "Don't all kids go to private school?" "Yes, I have a horse, don't you?"

But Palin beat it. Drugs and Alcohol got replaced with religious fervor, perhaps... a small price to pay.

We have had many success stories from unlikely political leaders, and plenty of failures by those "bred" for the job.

Me? I am THRILLED to see poor black (Obama) and poor white (Palin) kids grow up and really bring it in business, politics, whatever. But I won't be Bullshitted that either one of these candidates has the experience I would prefer in the White House.

The good news about Palin is that it is very unlikely she would have to finish out McCain's term, while Obama is at the TOP of the ticket.

What makes you think that Palin is a poor girl? I worked at the North Slope in 1981. At that time, rig workers would make over $100,000 a year. Her husband probably clears that by himself.

Considering she wears $400 designer prescription eyeglass frames (just the frames) I would hardly consider Palin or her family a member of the 99%.....formerly known as "working Americans".
Once again there is a yawning chasm between those who aspire to lead and everyone else, which is why we consistently have public policy that does not benefit the public.

She grew up in working class home.

I was not suggesting she was still working class.

I am not working class anymore, either, but I still see MYSELF that way - and I identify with others from the same background. As I am sure you do.

Anon @12:07

your partisanship is showing...

Liberals and conservatives alike where expensive accoutrements... you can't POSSIBLY say you are drawing conclusions from that.

Look, if you despise Bible thumping jag offs, just say it (I'll admit they are hardly appealing). If you don't like her because she is pretty and has a happy home, or she opposes abortion - just say so.

But the glasses? C'm on...

The USA Today (about as milquetoast as it comes) made an issue of pointing it out, but my point would be just as valid over Obama's wristwatch. And that point is, to paraphrase the old southern addage: "Those that has, gets. Those that ain't, don't."
