In an effort to save himself from one term-itis, the President is willing to burn whomever/whatever alive at the stake. The Mob grows hungry. The enlightened one grows desperate.

Willful and egregious safety violations by major oil companies-

As someone who has worked with many oil companies, I will tell you that some companies have intentional policies of dissing as many regulations as possible. Most of the drilling regulations are pretty reasonable. BP has racked quite a record that indicates systematic dodging of the rules.

I guess BP will sacrifice some low or mid-level schnooks. BP has billions of US$ in government contracts and wealth, including politicians who got "campaign contributiona". BP will get off lightly, since it contributes so much to the War of Terror.
