"So long as governments set the example of killing their enemies, private citizens will occasionally kill theirs." ~ Elbert Hubbard
----------------------------------------------
I had this to say in my December 16, 2010 post, "A Funny Thing Happened on the way to..."
In the nothing to do with Energy department...
Some times I despair for my fellow man (woman). The one wild card in all of our lives that we can do so little about are the crazies running amongst us, waiting to go off like a time bomb.
We have nuts going into school board meetings and firing 9mm handguns at their innocent and unarmed fellow man... and we have well known WABC Weather Girl Heidi Jones fabricating an attempted rape... Our government has raided religious groups and their supporters blew up a federal building killing innocent children... a man flies his plane into an I.R.S. building... Going "Postal" is now broadly understood in the lexicon.... Good grief. What's next?
We lack civility in our political discourse, we glorify violence in the media we allow our children to consume, we reject the sanctity of Life from abortion, to street violence, to war, to capital punishment... everybody is a victim and everyone seems to belong to a group that hates somebody with a passion.... and we wonder that people are going off half-cocked because somebody did them wrong?
Rational, and other wise law abiding citizens barrel down my street here in South Florida (20 mph zone) at 60 mph and are furious when I don't get out of their way... seemingly oblivious to the consequences should they hit one of my kids...
Sometimes I think I'm the only normal person left... is it just me, or have we gotten meaner? Well, mean people suck.
Maybe.... just maybe... the answer is not more government control, regulation, and tax extraction to fix all of these things.... maybe, just maybe, people would not be would so tightly wound that they are ready to shoot me over a parking space if they weren't so frantic in their lives... maybe we need to stop growing GDP and start growing GNH - Gross National Happiness. It seems for every attempted government solution we wind up with 2 new problems to solve - and 4 new taxes to pay for the solutions.
Forget "Power Down"... how about "Frantic Down"?
"Good Grief. What's next", indeed... What was next was another attack on our government's institutions, and the murder of innocents. I am already seeing on my Facebook page people on the Left attempting to make political hay out of this... the problem is "Guns" or "Sarah Palin" or some other such simple explanation and if we will only do "X", this problem, and the "wing nuts", will be removed and we can all get together and sing "Kum By Ya".
Why does it not dawn on the big government, interference, and regulator crowd that maybe, just maybe, there might be something else going on here? After all, we have people shooting our public officials and flying planes into IRS buildings... is it a "Plane" problem, too, in addition to guns?
Gerald Celente has this great quote - "When people lose everything, they lose it". Maybe. Or maybe we have created an expectation of "having it all" or "everything" and when it does not come true people lose it. Maybe our policies have created millions of government dependents and debtors full of anger and fury. How many times can "Its not Fair! We're mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore from fill-in-the-blank" be broadcast to millions and millions of people before it finds its way to a lunatic willing to kill to vent his spleen?
Let me ask you something... when was the last time you heard of an Amish drive by shooting? Or even a swindle? These people have little in the way of financial wealth, and few modern conveniences... and have exactly zero murders, political assassinations, or shoplifting for that matter... clearly, they are on to something.
I am not talking about just our social policies and programs... I am talking about the Big Box Takeover of the hinterlands, and the Big Bank Takeover of the financial system... the Corporate cronyism and lobby/statute power that has corrupted our system and destroyed small towns, small business, AND the family unit across the U.S. I know the Left loves when people like me talk like that, they hate the corporations (for all the wrong reasons)... they should continue to listen... maybe even hear me... these corporate policies are what they are because they enable the vast tax collections of the Federal Government to a far greater degree than was possible from a bizzilion small businesses and merchants, the very people that ran the local institutions, owned properties, and coached Little League... before the Big Boxes put them out of business and laid waste to their small towns... these tax collections were absolutely necessary in order to fund all of the social programs that are at this moment bankrupting the nation and addicting a substantial portion of the population to programs that absolutely, positively won't be there... They enabled the far reaching decisions of the Activist Jurists of the past century that have transformed our presidents from "Commander in Chief" into "Regulator in Chief", and then they funded the bureaucracy that continues its heavy handed extortions from and harassments of Americans who have lost most of their Constitutional Rights as a result of the takeover of the judiciary by the Progressives... you know, the folks that came up with our 12,000 page income tax code.
I am a HUGE John Lennon/Beatles fan... but it seems the very people that chant "All you need is Love" and "Give peace a Chance" are unable to see the outcomes of the combinational game theory actions that they are participating in.
Listen to the words of Judge John Roll, the Federal jurist who was murdered in the Arizona shooting:
The addition of what sometimes seems to be an inexhaustible number of law enforcement agents and federal prosecutors in Tucson division has now produced a tsunami of federal felony cases far beyond the management capacity of the four active district judges in Tucson division. Was the Judge asking for more judges? Or was he questioning the propriety of an ever expanding police state?
The Federal Government's reach, budget, and desire to control every aspect of our lives must be stopped before we have nothing of what was America remaining... and they must be stopped by us, the reasonable people that reject violence and deeply respect the value and sanctity of human life.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish
"Two key concepts for understanding Amish practices are their rejection of Hochmut (pride, arrogance, haughtiness) and the high value they place on Demut (humility) and Gelassenheit (calmness, composure, placidity), often translated as "submission" or "letting-be". Gelassenheit is perhaps better understood as a reluctance to be forward, to be self-promoting, or to assert oneself. The Amish's willingness to submit to the "Will of God", expressed through group norms, is at odds with the individualism so central to the wider American culture. The Amish anti-individualist orientation is the motive for rejecting labor-saving technologies that might make one less dependent on community. Modern innovations like electricity might spark a competition for status goods, or photographs might cultivate personal vanity."
The Amish are really anti-Amiraqan, since they are not proud to be Amiraqans. They are not helping improve the national economy; they bon't buy the lastest gadgets and help stimulate the economy. Lucky for them they are not brown and worship a god alien to most Amiraqans, otherwise they could be easily shot and their property can be easily seized by the government for "the greater good"
Jeffers,
So doing a little research about the Idea of a huge Gold find destroying gold Market price. When the Spaniards came to the new world with the help of small pox there was a flood of Gold and especially silver to Europe. European commodities prices rose by a factor of 5 in response to this influx. That only averages out to a 1.6% in annual change per yr. Thought it is was somewhat relevant to what you were saying. I think the Idea is that compared to everything else it is much more stable. Cultures all over the world came to an independent yet similar decision that Gold was the best form of money. Maybe the best part is that it has no natural uses in industry. Less than 6% of yearly production is used in any type of industrial process. Since the 1400's the annual increase has never been more than 5 percent and that was in the Gold rush of the 1850's. Since 1910 the production is only 2 percent of total already produced. You might already know all this, anyways hope that helps.
That was over a hundred yr period the influx was 5 fold. Sorry was not clear about that.
Ya know Greg watching the story unfold last night over at my girl friends house I kept hearing that Celente quote over and over in my head as well.
From what I have seen so far the killers political ideology is all over the map. Interestingly enough I have seen this chaotic and contradictory political ideology at work in young people on numerous occasions. Your post hits on it squarely these young people do not know what is right or wrong anymore. Without getting into it too far the left screams for freedom of choice for killing babies or sexual choices but then pushes for restrictions on everything else. The right points the finger at Constitutionally illegal legislation and then does nothing to stop it. Leaving young people who see things in black and white to believe they have no recourse but to take action themselves.
I also find it interesting that the right is allowing the left media to paint the Congress-woman and judge as "moderates". They are anything but moderates they may be a bit less progressive than Obummer but each of them were very left leaning. Each of them staunchly opposed the Arizona illegal-alien legislation and I am betting that their stance on that issue will be found out to be the underlying cause for the Congress-woman being targeted.
We will see how this develops and how it is spun by each side.
Dex,
The only reason gold isn’t an industrial metal is its rarity. The only industrial uses I am aware of are in the space program and dentistry; however this is entirely due to cost. Given it’s unique properties it could easily be the most important of the industrial metals were there sufficient quantities of the metal.
Gold is the most malleable of all metals; It can be hammered down to a width of 70 atoms. It is also the most ductile of all metals, it’s highly un-reactive (e.g. resistant to corrosion). It’s an excellent conductor of both heat and electrons, better than copper. While copper is less restive in a vacuum, in real world applications the surface develops a surface layer of corrosion degrades its performance below that of gold. Gold is highly reflective across the electromagnetic spectrum; it’s much better at radiation shielding than lead, which is one reason NASA uses it for shielding. Incidentally it is also used as a lubricant in satellites, due to its extreme malleability and resistance to corrosion.
I touched on this the other day, but books could be written on the potential industrial uses for gold. Ultimately cost is the only barrier, as a couple of pounds is easily justified for the space shuttle but not for a car, etc.
Dan,
Good points, that is also why it is so stable. It does not get used. THe predictions in the 60's is that it would go down to 7 dollars a ounce when the world was in a rush to delink from it. Although using gold in dental is no longer the best option. If there was something better to measure any fiat currency against, the 5000 yr's of written history would of shown this. It does the same thing today as it did 2000 or 4000 yrs ago.
I am already seeing on my Facebook page people on the Left attempting to make political hay out of this...
You too, eh?
I scored one or two of those on my Facebook page too if any of my FB friends here care to take a look, lol.
While watching the media spectacle today, one thing stands out. Left, Right, Liberal, Radical, etc. have all acquired the same meaning as Nazi. Whatever they once may have meant, they are now simply pejoratives connotating something bad.
While back on the energy topic, regarding the leak in Alaska pipeline this weekend (from Marketwatch) ...
"The (Wall Street) Journal reported that the shutdown shouldn’t much affect U.S. supplies because substantial amounts of oil are stored at Valdez."
As I have been saying ... :)
Wow Bur, you mean the media reports accurately?
Why would you read here then, given 'Jeffers Media Theory"?
The storage at Valdez is insignificant. The only question is how long the pipeline is shutdown for. The U.S. west coast might as well be another country on the other side of the world as far as oil supply is concerned... there are no trans-American pipelines.
A lot of the Alaskan crude output is sold overseas anyhow as there is fairly limited West Coast refining capability.
It would be nice if it could be shipped to the Gulf Coast, but as Greg said, there really isn't any way to get it there.
Then too, Alaskan crude production is WAY off its early 1980s high and is presently at about something like 675K bbl/day from the North Slope. It had been nearly 1.5 Mbbl/day IIRC back in The Day.
Dex,
Gold is still by far the best material used in dentistry. It will easily outlast all other materials.
IIRC, the Pipeline was carrying something like 900K bbls/day only 6 years ago when I visited Fairbanks. I drove out to one of the tourist, pipeline interpretation centers and it was funny to see all the tour buses in the parking lot (all idling excess diesel away ofc) while the tourist hippos oohhhed and ahhhhed over the pipeline.
(I was a tourist too, but I drove to the visitor center in my own, fuel-hogging rental car.)
As production diminishes, the TAPS is coming down to the minimum flows it needs to stay warm in the winter. If cost were no object (HA!) they could put a smaller pipe inside the larger one I read, but in reality, unless production takes a significant turn upwards (perhaps by opening the Arctic Refuge to the northeast for drilling), the TAPS will be shut down, probably within the decade. Given this reality, Alyeska, the pipeline operating company, is probably on the verge of significantly cutting back maint. $$ to the thing any way they can sneak such a change by the state.
The media report, which apparently we aren't supposed to believe :), is the pipeline ships 630,000 bpd these days -- way down from 1980s. And yeah, BP has little reason to put much maintenance into a dying oil operation in Alaska. But I do think most of Valdez crude does go to the West Coast, because as was mentioned, there are no pipelines over the Rocky Mountains. Peak oil, such as it is, may affect the West Coast first. The Panama Canal is too narrow for most supertankers, and China will absorb all the Pacific Ocean crude in transit.
Off-topic, Greg. Is there any chance you will revive your farm blog? The crazier things get, the more I retreat to my land, my chickens, my pigs and my bees. It is becoming far more important who my select board is than who my congressional rep is. (now where have I heard that before)
Kathy:
I will on the farm in March and I CAN"T WAIT. I have all my projects listed AND drawn out in diagrams... when I get there there won't be a lot of thinking... just a lot of doing.
BTW... I am going to start doing bees this year. I pick up a fully functioning hive around May 10 from a farmer up the road from my Amish friends in Scottsville KY... don't really know what to expect... at the very least I am counting on them to work my garden and my pasture clover...
The big projects are my substantially expanded raised bed garden and my hog business. I have a boar and 4 breeding sows. Before winter, I was building a containment area for them such that I could grow corn, beans, and most importantly pumpkins adjacent to their pens and then turn them out in that patch at the end of the growing season to finish the years pigs.
I'll let you know how it goes and I hope you will do the same.
K,
The Amish are VERY American. They organize and conduct their lives peacefully and privately. There is a BIG difference between self imposed behavior and government imposed behavior. They are responsible for themselves and don't ask for or need much government. Personal responsibility is the essence of the American experiment.
Regards,
Coal Guy
Further, K, if you don't like being Amish, you can opt out and leave. There is seldom an escape hatch from oppressive government.
Regards,
Coal Guy
Over the past 15 years Amish folk have moved in and started several districts in towns near where I recently bought property. Not for any trite tourist interest I would have in living near such folk but rather because of the pro-community, practical aspects of the way Plain folk live, I consider having them part of the community and local economy a highlight of my new area.
Doc,
My point was only 6% of New production was used in everything. The remaining 94% is either jewelry or coins which are both viable for trading. There are other alternatives to Gold for fillings and they will be used more as Gold goes up. I misstated by saying other better alternatives.
Jeffers,
More Importantly outside gold. The Chinesse developed the first super fighter called the J-20. It is on the same level as the F-22 raptor. You can see leaked pictures and a takeoff video on YouTube. We stopped production of the f-22 and will now need to ramp it back up. The most commonly used plane in the coming yrs in the west was suppose to be the f-35 joint strike fighter which was a designed and built by a conglomeration of nations in NATO. Much cheaper than f-22. The thinking by military brass is that we could not penetrate airspace with any fighter except the f-22. You think this is the start of a new weapons race, I do. Whether real or perceived this is a threat and we will spend to defend it. This is problem with being an aging power. We have already invested in military for 100 yrs without end. The Chinese just starting really hitting the accelerator and have bypassed 2 or 3 stages of weaponry, saving trillions. They can now compete with us on a military level this is going to get real interesting.
K,
A few of Greg's posts back, some goofy lib suggested that it would be a good idea for the government to forbid anyone who lived within 5 miles of work to drive there. This would lower health care costs by increasing physical fitness and save oil. Both are absolutely true. But, the problem, as with all such hair brained schemes, is the unintended consequences.
Such a regulation would immediately PO 40,000,000 people. 4,000,000 of them would become scofflaws, and drive anyway. This creates a law enforcement issue. How do you separate the illegal drivers from the legal? How do you punish them? If you can figure that out, you need to hire a lot more law enforcement. Further, beyond the 4,000,000 scofflaws, you probably create 40,000 political radicals and a few dozen terrorists. That necessitates secret police to infiltrate and stop terrorists before they can do damage. Of course, the narcissists who put these regulations in place will never back down, and rescind them.
It doesn't take too much of this foolishness to create a violent opposition that must be controlled. This is the path that creates the brutal police states that most, and eventually all, socialist experiments become. I hope that never happens here.
Regards,
Coal Guy
I am told that the man who drove his airplane into the Federal building ran afoul of section 1706 of the 1986 tax reform act. This section limits the form of employment of technical workers to direct employee status only. Any company that employs technical contractors may be liable for all withholding taxes, regardless of the contractual arrangement.
I suppose this little diddy came from the RINO side of the aisle to try to control engineering costs for defense contractors.
Regards,
Coal Guy
People you are forgetting the violent school shooting which occurred in an Amish village in Lancaster in 2006 during which ten school girls were shot execution style and five died. Violence happens in Amish land too. And the gun control opponents keep using the same tired old excuse that Hitler and Mussolini took away people's guns... Already people on this site are blaming the government for Congresswoman Gifford's shooting... Put it to rest. This woman was a wife and mother first. Show a little respect and lay off the anti government rhetoric.
All of those acts were senseless, unnecessary violence. None of those people deserved to die. PERIOD. As Greg says, we need to act within the law now to stop what is going on.
The violent rhetoric on all sides does not help. Government encroachment on constitutional rights does not help either.
Mish linked a video regarding the EU and its actions. The same concepts apply here.

Dear Anon:
Are you FREAKING RETARD?
The murderer of those girls was not a member of the Amish community... he was a known child molester from the outside community... If only there was a 9h Canto of Hell.
Anon @11:49,
I did not forget the Amish school shooting. In fact, I explicitly recalled it. The reason I never mentioned it, however, is that the gunman came from outside the Amish community.
If he had been Amish, or former Amish, then you'd have a point, but he wasn't, and so you don't.
And where, exactly, did I lack respect there Anon/Crybaby/phil/Fatkitten
Please go away. You suffer, horribly, from the condition Borderline Personality Disorder. There is no cure, but there is treatment. You desperately need help, but not for you... Borderlines destroy the mental health of everybody they come in contact with... leaving those closest with lasting PTSD.
Your black and white thinking/analysis gives you away. Borderlines cannot conceive of "Grey".
So please, take your BPD and hate and rage elsewhere.
Oh I've been diagnosed with plenty of illnesses in my life but that isn't one of them... Im happy to receive free medical advice however, you could even send me prescriptions if you choose.
You can say whatever you want to deny it but the fact is the most violent, angry members of our society who commit these crimes are always members of the ultra right wing conservative community who listen to the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and hate the government. And Sarah Palin's hit list included the lovely congresswoman who was shot. There's no point wasting time arguing with people on this site. But I'll check back every once in a while to make sure nobody shoots Bureaucrat
These lefty/progressives are completely insane.
They have now discovered that the killer was a volunteer for Gifford's 2007 campaign. She even sent him a thank you letter and the sheriff knew about prior threats from this guy.
Unbelievable using something like what happened as a political side show.
PP:
He was a volunteer for her? Do you have a link?
Thanks.
Sepsey Street has a post with all the relevant links. I believe the one I quoted was from the Washington Post.

Borderline Personality Disorder from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder
(Here are the first couple paragraphs... BTW I would eat S^#! if you are not a Borderline Personality.)
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder described as a prolonged disturbance of personality function in a person (generally over the age of eighteen years, although it is also found in adolescents), characterized by depth and variability of moods.[n 1] The disorder typically involves unusual levels of instability in mood; black and white thinking, or splitting; the disorder often manifests itself in idealization and devaluation episodes, as well as chaotic and unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image, identity, and behavior; as well as a disturbance in the individual's sense of self. In extreme cases, this disturbance in the sense of self can lead to periods of dissociation.[1]
BPD splitting includes a switch between idealizing and demonizing others. This, combined with mood disturbances, can undermine relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. BPD disturbances also may include self-harm.[2] Without treatment, symptoms may worsen, leading (in extreme cases) to suicide attempts.[n 2]
There is an ongoing debate among clinicians and patients worldwide about terminology and the use of the word borderline,[3] and some have suggested that this disorder should be renamed.[4] The ICD-10 manual has an alternative definition and terminology to this disorder, called Emotionally unstable personality disorder.
Sorry it is from World net daily
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=249381
And being a Borderline is not your fault... mental illness is not the fault of the sufferer... but Borderlines are BEYOND difficult to deal with... the truly sad thing is that the diagnosis has been attacked by the PC crowd, who expanded the diagnosis so that it would include straight men - you see, BPD strikes women and Gay men exclusively, nothing in the literature and research since the diagnosis was first described suggests the condition strikes straight men... Since that was unacceptable to the Leftist/PC/Feminist/Gay special interest groups, the diagnosis was expanded. Still, having done EXTENSIVE research on the subject to help a family member, and having spoken to most of the specialists in the field who ALL say they have never met a straight male borderline, its just one more form of PC censorship.
You desperately need help.
Some of the people here thought you were a male... I smelt you across the web... single female, no children, over 40, bizarre relationships, a couple of religion changes... or at least 1.... how am I doing so far? Bet it describes you to a T. Spent my life analyzing what people were NOT telling me...
I truly wish I could waive a magic wand and make you well... but you can help yourself. Get help.
Coal Guy,
I am not Amish. The last paragraph of the first comment on this post is satire depicting one of the thought patterns of the typical Amiraqan.
In Amiraqa, I think pride is vastly over-rated as a virture and humility is vastly under-rated. So, I think taking pride in being an American is a foolish notion, in part because it usually due to fate or luck being born in America, not by exerting effort. And in part because pride can lead to a superiority complex, in which other nations are considered inferior and then that can lead into falsely believing the people of those nations to be inferior beings.
Bureaucrats and stock holders would lose control and profits if more people emulated the simple living of the Amish. So the government and corporations will continue to brainwash and deceive and trick Amiraqans to stay with the status quo. The advertising slogan of a lottery comes to mind; "You got to be in it to win it." Not many will think of doing something significantly different, which could lead to real fun and happiness.
The people that really own Amiraqa have collectively decided to destroy it, by letting QE 1, QE 2, the PATRIOT Act, etc. to come into existance. They will continue with the age old way any empire deals with its foes; divide and conquer by coercion or cunning. Maybe some false-flag attacks on the road transportation system will occur (maybe numerous car bombings would do the trick); the Amiraqans would demand the government do something about them, and the government would make a new agency (the National Highway Security Agency maybe) to be the ground version of the TSA for the government made threat.
Maybe the government will have the car or tire companies have wide spread product recalls, followed with phoney emergency safety regulations that greatly reduce the number of vehicles on the roads. Government agents can drive around late at night to shoot HERF guns at the cars of scoflaws, frying the cars' electrical systems.
Maybe the government and evil corporations have a plan using GM food as a binary chemical weapon. So far the targets would have ingested the first part. When the cull has to take place, the second part is released on the market causing mass poisoning deaths to occur a couple of months later.
Such actions would take care of most of the ornery 40,000,000 sheople.
Greg,
Your BPD rant reminds me of a HUGE problem. We had a rather helpful attorney that made a career out of suing DOC. When he wasn’t busy suing us, he found time to sue the states mental hospitals. Since they couldn’t afford to be perfect they had to shut down; and now we have all the states loons running around without help, save the ones whom got sent to prison. We had to partition a facility so we could protect them from the cons that belong in prison. There is a world of difference between someone with three or four personalities writing checks out the same checkbook and someone who kites their accounts up to 50K – 60K and skips town.
Given the way the legal profession works, I’m sure the fine gentleman referenced above has had his methods replicated in other states. After all he is an AV attorney, a leading light if you will. We probably have half the nation’s loons running around unmedicated and without access to help.
Dan:
I hear you so loudly it hurts the ears... unfortunately, if you think things are bad now...it is going to get so very much worse... care for the mentally ill will revert to the family, but there are some conditions, BPD among them, they tend to leave the sufferer alone as the family abandons them because associating with folks with some forms of mental illness is just sooooooo painful for everybody else.
And you know all of this by stalking me? Or did you read it in people magazine? I hope I'm not on the hit list for liberals who don't hate the government...its wonderful that you consider yourself qualified to have a medical degree by reading wikipedia but always remember a little knowledge is a dangerous thing
K,
The people that run the show are mostly corporate/liberal/fascist types. They are most likely the people that you vote for. I agree, they want to keep us on the treadmill. My problem with the Left is that they will not respect peoples' position to either stay on or leave of their own volition. As far as I can see, the Right wants to control my bedroom. The Left wants to control everything else.
Have you noticed that almost NOTHING has changed under Obama? Have you noticed that he came out of nowhere? It takes BIG MONEY backing to come out of nowhere. The was hand picked by the suits and is still run by them. Have you noticed that the Democrat party is funded by big money interests to a much greater extent than the Republicans? Have you noticed that these interests are those that they claim to hate? HA! The Republicans still get a lot of $100 donations. Not that I support the RINOs either. The Democrats are almost exclusively funded by the fat cats. Don't you think that there is quid pro quo there?
My point is that the people you support are by and large the ones causing the problem. They just deflect the blame elsewhere. Really. Take a close look. What giant multinational corporation would benefit most from cap and trade? GE. What multinational corporation wrote the legislation? GE. What multinational corporation was the Democrat party's biggest contributor? GE. Which corporation was BHO's biggest campaign contributor? GS. Are you getting it? Support of the mainstream of either party supports the path to corporate fascism, and steadily diminishing individual rights and freedom. We need to support candidates that respect individual rights smaller government and the Constitution. People will by and large take care of themselves and each other if left to their own devices. It has been going on for hundreds of thousands of years. The big government thing just allows them to own us.
Regards,
Coal Guy
Indeed Coal Guy.
I read a blog post somewhere once that argued that Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich actually have a lot in common, despite one being a libertarian and the other basically communist.
They both are anti-central-power, anti-government (in the traditional sense), and neither had a snowball's chance in hell of being elected to the White House because the powers that be would never donate a dime to either one of those men.
Anon:
I'm stalking you? I don't know who you are! You appear on my blog under various aliases and conduct yourself in the realm of the Borderline! It has been PAINFULLY obvious.I realize that my assessment of you was likely to be terribly accurate... not because I have ESP, I am merely self trained after decades dealing with the psycopaths on Wall Street.
Its true, I have no medical training... but let me share something with you about the human ability to research and understand...
Some years back, I went to see an orthopedic surgeon about my knee.... after a few minutes of listening to the guy I said:
"Doc. How much time, over the time you were in medical school did you spend on the mechanics of the human knee? What, 2 weeks? Tell you what, I will be back in a couple of weeks, and I will know EVERYTHING about the mechanics of the human knee that you know... then we can speak intelligently about my issue as equals." How much time do you think it took me to do that? A couple of weeks.
I had the same debate with a Doctor regarding Borderline. He had spent years studying the myriad pyschological disorders... I only had to master ONE. Believe me, I would prefer to remain blissfully ignorant of BPD... I know the life devastating effects that you have endured and what has happened to the people around you... and I am sad beyond measure... but I am not here to solve your issue... I wish you well, and I wish you would cease commenting here.
Dan,
Interesting about the mental hospitals. I just figured that they were defunded because the inmates couldn't vote. The way it was done was for the courts to say that unless the inmates were a clear and present danger, they, who cannot make a rational decision, had the right to leave.
Taking care of the mentally ill is one thing that the government could do that is far beyond the means of 99% of the population to do. It makes me sick. It is one of the few government welfare functions that I can agree with, and we stopped it, leaving the mentally ill to wander the streets and live in refrigerator boxes. Where is the howling from the left?

Learn to spell America. Trashing the name is just inflammatory and childish. Stay and try to fix it or find somewhere else to live. I've spent time in Europe and Asia, and am always very glad to come home.

K: You are a bright young man... we are not speaking down to you... we are just old enough to appreciate just a good it is to be an American, and having had children and family we would appreciate it if our way of life would continue. We have our faults, and are navigating a particularly hard time now... a time that will take commitment, honor, and fair dealing in order to come out well on the other side... each of us has to be up to the task.
The kids two favorite books were the communist manifesto and Mein Kampf. His friends called him a dope smoking leftist and to top it off he has occultist ties. Anyways definitely sounds like a conservative Christian.
Coal Guy,
You nailed it buddy.
As many of you know, I am an adoptive parent. When we decided to adopt, we chose children with very little chance of finding permenant homes because of special needs or circumstances as we had already been blessed with 3 healthy, bright boys. One of our adopted children suffers from some pretty serious mental illness. We get excellent care for her but we know that the time will come when her services will be curtailed. We have managed to put together a wonderful community team for her but, as good as it is, it won't replace good medication. I guess it is the reality of dealiing with my children that makes it difficult to be cavelier about what losing "nanny state" services really means. It pains me to hear the disrespect given to our nation. For all of it's faults, this is still my country. I must be getting old. I may have to retire to Greg's farm blog.
Coal Guy,
The last time I voted was over a decade ago when I didn't know any better. Voting in federal elections is a waste of time. Those second and minutes could have been used to make some body freer or happier. I did vote for Ron Paul back in '88 and I don't think he could be classified as one of the "corporate/liberal/fascist types". I try my best to not support Monsanto and its ilk, so any money they get from me they get indirectly.
The only changes under Obama are cosmetic. I knew they would be before he became el presidente. I think he knows if he really tried to change things for the better, he would become the next JFK. I think the real owners allowed him to get elected so that if anything goes wrong, they could have him blamed for it and thus get the racists to hate him and not them. The resulting racial strife would be a welcomed diversion to them.
Cap and trade is just another scam to make money by further enslaving the average Joe with Joe's blessing and support.
As for calling America "Amiriqa", that is to express what the politicians like Dick Cheney, Obama, Lieberman, et al., and the big corporations really intend to make America become like Iraq; a country that had a better standard of living in the recent past and which is plagued with wide spread violence and squalor and insanity. The only other name I could think of is the United States of American Indian Reservations, which is much too long, though it also describes the country they really want.
The only way I can think of countering them is to work on small-scale solutions; improving one's lot and that of one's friends and families, and perhaps one's town or villiage. One perhaps has more control over the self and friends and relatives than some corporation. You are with yourself all the time, while a corporation most likely is not. Any thing that makes one more independent of the evil people and their organizaitons must be a good thing. The Amish, the Ni-Vanuatu and other groups have come up with such solutions that have worked so far.
I've just come across an interesting article that high lights some of the complexity of the problems that plague America-

Kathy:
I remember now that you had a daughter with BPD I think? Among other issues? You are truly amazing. Knowing what I know now about BPD I simply would not have the strength. I am sorry if I troubled you in anyway... the individual in question here has been stalking the blog in a variety of apparitions... perhaps my response could have been more measured...
Please don't leave us. We need your rational and calming voice. The topic of late has been hard... it is so very painful to consider that these events could actually occur and that such evil exists in our world.
One of my older girls is probably BPD. She is beautiful, bright and impossible to live with. Thankfully, she's an adult now and I can let her stuff go. We did the best we could. It was actually a younger daughter I was referring to. She is bipolar, with a side helping of touretts syndrome and OCD. As she is very well cared for she's been employed at the same place for 2 years and has a second volunteer position working with nursing home residents. She's the single bravest person I ever knew. I wasn't upset by what you wrote. I'm just weary with the rhetoric. I need spring and it's only January. I feel like the winter is in my soul.
Hang in there, Kathy... Spring IS coming... The South has had a TOUGH winter; we lost 1 goat and 1 kid. My cows seem to be handling it well, as are my chickens and pigs... I can't imagine winter in New England anymore - had my share of NY winters.
I am going over to a raised bed garden for everything except corn and potatoes and high vining plants and am going to do everything square foot style. Well, as much as possible.
I have ordered 2 bee hives that I pick up May 10. Been milking the cows and mixing it with corn and beans for the pigs, and they are getting BIG.
Mostly, as this will be my 6th growing season on the farm, I have a pretty good system down and don't buy much feed anymore (other than for the pigs), though I still buy hay. I find the key is not overstocking for the pasture you have.
It is really not all that time consuming... I don't have to go to a gym, or drive to the store very often. We do a Costco run 3 or 4 times per year and that's pretty much it.
Oh, I am going to grow a big sunflower patch for chicken feed and for Sunflower Oil... don't know how that's going to work out but I grew the seed last year.
How's your dexters making out?
Your bees will love the sunflowers, at least mine did.
I would recommend ordering some extra supers and frames (or getting plans to make them yourself) as you can only hope you will need them. If you do need them it would be very bad to not have them.
The dexters are difficult-escape artists with a nasty disposition. They are at a neighbor's farm, thank goodness. We are getting Brown Swiss and should be drowning in milk by May. We do a lot of this stuff cooperatively which makes sense as we are all small operations. Our bees did very well. We got 110 pounds of honey from 8 hives-not bad as we don't draw from any hive that looks weak and leave a generous portion of honey behind. Creamed honey has been a big seller for us. The cider press is a huge success. We got 58 gallons of cider for us and another 300 between the other owners. The NOFA conference is this weekend. I'm presenting again which should is always fun.
PP:
Thanks! I had not thought of that but I shall make sure I have extras on hand. Hopefully I will need it.
Kathy:
On milk cows... I have found that only cows that have been bottle raised have a good shot at becoming a hand milk cow... we had Bonnie since she was a calf, and Naomi was another family we know's second milk cow - I milked her before I bought her.
You CAN break the others, but it is a pain in the @$$ and you WILL get kicked - even if you tie their back legs. In fact, I still tie up Bonnie's back legs because she will knock the milk bottle out of my hands sometimes.
K,
I've got to agree, although I'm not yet as radicalized as you. The only solutions are local solutions. This is why I am so against big government. Why should an organization that is not going to be effective in the solutions to upcoming problems be entitled to $3+ trillion to spend on their mischief? The federal government needs to be brought back inside its constitutional limitations
It seems that the RINOs pander to their constituencies and claim that they are "deregulating," which they do to the benefit of the big boys. The Democrats play a different game. They try to divide us into groups along lines of sex, race, economics and any other crack that they can put a wedge into. One group is the victim, and must be helped, the other is the oppressor, and is villainized. Laws, rules and regs are created to benefit the "victims." The real beneficiaries are the government itself, as it steadily gains power, and corporations large enough to gain advantage in an over-regulated environment. This helps the big boys crush smaller competition and prevents entry into their markets. The big corps LOVE the regulation. Both the Republican and Democrat strategies seem to serve the same end.
I'll continue to vote in federal elections. There may be no good candidates, but there is always someone to vote against. Voting for government that is not quite so bad is better than not voting at all. It is small consolation, though.
I also tend mostly to vote for republicans. Even though there are many RINOs, there is a group within the party that truly respects the constitution and individual rights and liberties. The Democrats, especially at the national level, are truly hard core Socialists. Centralize! Centralize! Centralize! cannot be promotive of individual freedom, no matter how they spin it.
Regards,
Coal Guy
