I homeschooled for a number of years due to the inability of the public school to properly educate or even protect my kid. I'm not saying they didn't try but integrating a kid with serious mental health issues is just not possible given the kinds of budget and logistical problems that we face. We did finally find an excellent therapeutic program and she's graduating this year, a far different outcome than that of her birth mother. Having resources is a very good thing if you adopt kids with special needs. But to the point. One of the things our school district did really well was to include my daughter in all extra-curricular activites whenever she was able. It was a win-win for all and I just don't see the problem. My other kids all participated in tennis, golf, soccer and ski team as well as academic decathalon, drama and music. Soccer helped foot the bill for a very nice private woman's college for my two oldest girls. Thank goodness, none of them were interested in football. It's far too dangerous for my tastes. I didn't even want my kids pitching in Little League. I saw too many blown shoulders and bad elbows in the ER. To be honest, soccer caused a few serious injuries too. I'm not sure I would encourage them to play heavy duty sports again.

It is obvious to me at least that the public primary and secondary schools have taken more money to do less with for the past 40 years. Organized sports is one of the few 'draws' they have left, so it makes sense they would try to use it as a way to get those pesky overperforming homeschooled youngsters back into the fold.
