Rail Traffic Doesn't Lie

Goods are transported across the U.S. on trucks and rail cars, so keeping an eye on rail traffic and diesel fuel consumed gives you a good luck at actual, and very accurate, data.

The rail car data for crushed stone stinks...

Crushed Stone

As does the data for Lumber...

Lumber and Wood Products

Whatever stimulus that made its way out of Washington did not go to "shovel ready" projects. I'll give you 2 1/2 guesses where they went...

I remember my Amtrak trip from Chicago to Denver and back last month. The only trains we passed in the opposite direction were coal trains -- coal is for making electricity. There weren't any box cars at all that I remember on the whole trip. More anecdotal eveidence, I know. :)

And the numbers for coal trains is down as well....

Would be a surprise. :) No matter how many residences get their power cut off in this depression, you still need a certain amount of "coal burning" to keep the generators running. I wouldn't see it as being a variable thing.
